Slot Machine Payouts are found on the machines' Payout Schedule

The symbols on the payout schedule represent the winning symbols if they where to line up on the payline in the specified order. (Paylines are the lines running horizontal or vertical across the slot reels or display.

Fruits and Bars
 on Slot Machines

Originally, some of the first slot machines paid out sticks of gum.

The "bars" on these slot machines reels represented sticks of gum.

The "fruits" on the reels represented the gum flavors.

For instance, a straight slot machine will have a payout schedule for the amount of coins one bets. The jackpot for a one coin bet may payout 800 coins, while a two coin bet pays 1,600 coins and a three coin bet pays a jackpot of 2,400 coins. Depending on what the value of the coin size is, the monetary payout will vary.  For this particular payout scale, if the coin size was fifty cents, a three coin bet would payout $1,200 (.50 x 2,400), while a coin size of $1 would payout $2,400 (1 x 2,400) for a three coin bet.  On a straight slot machine, these payouts will always be the same.

Depending on the payout schedule of a slot machine, winning payouts will vary from machine to machine.  Knowing the difference between the jackpot payout of a progressive slot and a straight slot, let's examine what a fixed payout schedule looks like.

The above picture is a screen shot of the payout table from the "Red, White and Blue" 3-reel straight slot machine.

As the table shows, the max payout is for 10,000 coins on a 3 coin bet.  For a two coin bet, the max payout is 4,000 coins, and a single coin wager can win as much as 2,000 coins on a single spin.  It is clear to see the more coins one bets, the better the odds and payout are.

Those players who do not pay any attention to payout schedules are often the same players who walk away from the slot machines without a coin in their pocket. Similarly, those players who only pay attention to the max payout (in this case, 10,000 coins) are not doing themselves any favors as well.

On the other hand, the smartest way to examine a payout schedule is to look at the lower winning symbol combinations.  Choose a machine that offers the most winnings for the lower and medium symbol combos, because these are the ones you will be hitting most often, which consequently, will keep you playing longer.  Do not play a slot machine simply because it has a high maximum payout.

Reasons for doing so, are the simple fact that your chances of winning the large jackpot are a lot lower than winning smaller payouts. By walking around the casino, you should look at all slot machine payout schedules before you begin to play.

For example, let's say you want to decide between two slot machines.  One machine offers a payout of 10 coins (on a 3 coin wager) for the lowest winning symbol combination, while the other machine offers a payout of 15 coins for a 3 coin wager with the same odds of winning as the first machine.  The choice should be obvious.
