In 2007, the United Kingdom commissioned the
British Gambling Prevalence Survey. The survey revealed that 0.6
percent of adults in the British Isles suffer from problem gambling
habits. A similar study was performed on the British population 8 years
ago; the results were virtually the same. This flies in the face of
skeptics that believe legalized online casinos would lead to more cases
of problem gambling.
According the study, problem gambling is still more
prevalent among men then women. There also seem to be a larger number
of problem gamblers in younger age groups for both men and women.
People involved in spread betting claimed the
highest percentage of compulsive gambling trends at 14.7 percent. Next
came the people that used betting terminals at 11.2 percent. People
involved in betting exchanges had a problem gambling rate of 9.8
percent.
For the first time in any such study, online casinos and Internet
gambling were included. The survey revealed that only 6 percent of the
British population use online casinos. Of the people that use online
casinos, the problem gambling rate was only at 6 percent.
The National Lottery is unquestionably the most
popular form of gambling in the United Kingdom. 57 percent of the
British population participates in the National Lottery; a decline form
1999 when participation was at 65 percent.
