Just as victory was in site, online casinos are
getting a raw deal. President-Elect Barack Obama is overtly technology
friendly. As a matter of fact at the official website for the
President-Elect, he outlines his policy toward technology and sciences.
In that outline he expresses his admiration for the Internet and the
necessity to protect it as an unfiltered source of information and
education. The Internet has been the single most influential piece of
technology in the last decade.
Proponents of online casinos were excited to see
such a tech friendly leader come to power. Hopes of overturning the
damaging Unlawful Internet Gambling Act seemed just within grasp.
However, a lame duck president can still be very dangerous. At the
eleventh hour, the United States Treasury is attempting to pass
regulations to implement the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
before current President George W. Bush leaves office.
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Act was passed in
back in October of 2006, over two years ago. Why the sudden push to
implement it now.
There is a rumor that a White House official with
interests in protecting the National Football League is placing
inappropriate pressure on the United States Treasury to get this done.
Though facts are still foggy, sources say this is the most probable
cause. The name of the culprit is William Wichterman; a top aide in the
George W. Bush White House. Wichterman was paid as recently as March of
2008 to lobby against online casinos for the National Football League.
