Online Casinos Plot Return to US
Online casinos are gambling on the near return of
the United States market. Odds are good that during the incoming
administration, online casinos and Internet gambling will be legalized
and regulated. Not only is President-elect Obama a proponent of online
casinos but Democrats, which have pushed for legalized online casinos,
have a majority of both the house and Senate.
Shortly after the passing of the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act, several online casinos pulled out of the
United States market; many thought permanently. The Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act was put in place by Republicans back in 2006 by
slipping it into a must pass national security bill.
In recent weeks, Republicans have tried desperately
to offer regulations that implement the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act. The new rules are ineffective and some argue open a
wide gate way to legal online casinos, or at the very least Internet
gambling. The new rules do little more than ask banks to adjust their
agreement letters to clients.
The online casinos have high hopes for the
administration, many believe President Barack Obama will lead to proper
regulations required to keep close watch on the Internet gambling
industry. Obama has made it clear that his intention for the Internet
is to maintain its status as an unfiltered source of information.
“With the Obama Administration, America has a group that is going to do
the right thing by the online gambling community, said an observer Bill
Batsky.
“How long that will take is yet unknown, but the
reality is that it will get done. Once regulations are in place, online
companies will once again re-enter the American market.”
