After seeing what online casinos did for the
economy of the small island nation that embraced them from the
beginning, many countries are trying to accommodate online casinos and
become another major base for the industry. Ireland is determined to do
just that and has decided to uphold its no tax policy toward online
casinos. Many online casino operators were nervous about the potential
of a new tax as the country recently introduced a tax on brick and
mortar betting parlors.
Officials are holding off on taxing online casinos
until they can gather more information about the industry. Irish
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan claims the Finance Department would like
better research online casinos before deciding whether they will be
taxed at all. The country has an interest in not taxing online
casinos. The jobs created by operators based in the country have been
helpful and many are concerned that levying a tax might send away the
operators and the jobs they created with them.
Even if online casinos are taxed in Ireland, it may not be that much
money. Recently, Ireland increased the tax paid by brick and mortar
gambling establishment from one percent to two. In addition to that,
the companies did not have to pay any tax on wager made over the phone.
Ireland is clearly very friendly to gambling operations in general, not
just online casinos.
Ireland has good reason to expect more jobs and
economic prosperity from their no tax policy as more and more online
casinos are likely to flock to their green country.
