Sometime this month, rumors began to surface
in New Hampshire that the House Ways and Means Committee voted in favor
of a bill that would bring slot machines to casinos in the state. The
vote was in fact is support of further considering the issue in the next
term.
End of term committee votes can be difficult
to understand, especially when it concerns interim study bills. The
fact that a majority of House members voted in favor of further study
does not mean they favor online casinos in New Hampshire. Many of them
simply believe that the issue should not be completely thrown out. Tax
on slot machines could be a great way to bring money into state
coffers.
Legislators in New Hampshire have several
questions they need answered before approving slot machines. There is
the question of the economic and social cost the slot machines may wage
on the communities they find themselves in. Some legislators question
the whether revenues from slot machines will actually outweigh the cost
of installing them.
There are doubts about slot machines as a
viable source of revenue in the state. Some argue that slot machine
revenues could sustain the state for the next ten years while other
argue that even minor social expenses could immediately wipe out what
ever gain slot machines have to offer. The slot machine industry
insists they know best what slot machines have to offer the state of New
Hampshire.
Then there are question of competition. Many
legislatures doubt slot machines can remain profitable especially if
neighboring states like Massachusetts choose to legalize slot machines
next.
