Belmont Sneaks Slot Machines

Slot machines have become a necessity for almost all gambling establishments.  Many raceways, especially horse racing tracks have installed slot machines just as a way to pay the bills.  Slot machines give gamblers a reason to come to the track when there are not any big races at hand.  When there are big races, revenues from slot machines have been used to sweeten the purse to attract more big name horse teams.

Kentucky, currently caught up in a legal battle against online casinos, has been shooting itself in the foot for years.  By not allowing slot machines as their racing facilities they have failed miserably to compete with neighboring states.

A greyhound racetrack in Belmont, New Hampshire is looking to increase revenue, not by installing slot machines, but terminals modeled after slot machines that allow gamblers to wager on the outcome of old horse races.

They are intending to use the machines the same way other tracks use slot machines, to attract more guests and to bring more money to the track.  Those opposed to the idea of the machines have outright accused them of trying to sneak slot machine into New Hampshire.

However, the machines are not slot machines.  They are called Instant Racing Terminals.  Proponents point out that gambling on footage of old races is in no way different from gambling on live races or simulcast races.  Bets on the machines are pooled in a manner known as pari-mutuel betting.  On a slot machine, players bets are pitted against the machine itself.
