Everything in the horse racing industry is in a state of
flux. Calvin Borel, the jockey that rode the Kentucky Derby winner
“Mine That Bird” all the way to victory is about to make history. His
change to Kentucky Oaks winner “Rachel Alexandra” for the Preakness
Stakes marks the first time in history that a Kentucky Derby winning
jockey changed horses for the Preakness Stakes.
It was probably no secret to Borel that “Rachel
Alexandra” is favored to win the Preakness. His change marks and
attitude that has spurred a lot of significant change in the horse
racing industry: whatever works.
The industry has had to find new ways of generating
revenue as well as ways of cutting fat off of operations just to stay
operating. So far, most tracks have discovered that slot machines are
the devices that best improve the industry’s chances of long term
survival.
The introduction of slot machines and other forms of
alternative gaming have provided wonderful benefits to the horse racing
business. Track owners are of course pleased by the significant and
quick income that slot machines can produce. Slot machines also allow
the tracks to increase purses for races. Bigger purses mean bigger
names in the races organized by the track.
Horse owners, jockeys, and trainer are all looking for
the best purse to win. That means that slot machines alone increase the
quality of competition at many tracks. The chain reaction continues as
the better competition of course increases the number of gamblers that
wager on the race.
