NFL Set to Sack Online Casinos
The National Football League may prove to be an
even bigger opponent for Barney Frank that Christian Conservatives. The
National Football League is doing everything they can to resist the
legalization and regulation of online casinos or any other form of
online gambling. Well funded and extremely popular, the league has a
lot of political sway. According to the National Football League, their
opposition to legalized online casinos is an effort to, at all costs,
maintain “the integrity of our game.”
“We understand that illegal gambling currently
occurs, but there is little we can do about that,” said Brian McCarthy
an National Football League spokes person.
“However, we can exercise our right to oppose
Internet betting on our games… Gambling on our games - online or off
line - threatens the integrity of our games and all the values they
represent.”
The curious, however, is not that the National
Football League opposes online gambling at all, it is the fact that they
oppose online gambling in general. It would be understood if the league
to such a bold stance against online sportsbetting, but they are also
standing in the way of legal online casinos and legal online poker.
Neither online casinos nor online poker threaten the integrity of
sporting matches.
The lobbying plan being crafted by the National
Football League could potentially carry a lot of pull. Back in 2008 the
leagues hired full time lobbyists. The league has even organized a
political action committee to raise funds for the preservation of the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The league is not shy of
supporters as they could very easily draw the support of other
professional sporting leagues.
