Online casinos exist and they are not going
anywhere. Online casinos will still be around even if the United States
does not succeed in legalizing and regulating the industry. When looked
at from that point of view, it becomes apparent that regulation is the
only option to help problem gamblers when it comes to the online casino
question.
There are many people out there that fear online
casinos will cause an epidemic of problem gambling. The theory makes
very little sense if you know anything about compulsive gamblers.
The Australian government offers a definition of
problem gambling as follows: “Problem gambling is characterized by many
difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling which leads
to adverse consequences for the gambler, others, or for the community.”
The impulse that causes problem gambling has been
described as an internal tendency. Therefore it does not matter if
online casinos exist or go away, are legal or outlawed. Problem
gamblers will find something to gamble on, that is for sure. Serious
gambling addicts have a hard time turning down a bet as to which way the
wind will blow next.
If the interest of protecting impulsive gamblers is
at all sincere, online casinos must be regulated. Without regulation,
the United States cannot keep tabs on the activities of less legitimate
gambling sites and the crooks out their have no authority to which to
answer. Problem gamblers are likely to find themselves at an
unregulated site in order to get there fix and those people will have no
form of consumer protection if some sort of regulation legislation is
not passed for online casinos.
