Ohio Still Stuck on Slot Machines
Ohio legislators know one thing and one thing for sure; they need new
ways of generating funds. Week after week Ohio residents are hearing
about the state’s lack of revenue and how it continues to shrink. Tax
revenues are at an all time low in Ohio and the government needs a
solution quickly.
Several ideas for generating more income have been considered and
many of them have been thrown out as too complicated, not quick enough,
and others have simply been considered political suicide.
There was talk of raising income tax, but that is not likely to
happen especially with a major state election around the corner. Slot
machines and gambling expansion seems to have been rejected as an idea,
but the thought is still very much on the table. Supporters of gambling
expansion in the state of Ohio believe that not only can slot machines
bring the state a lot of money in tax dollars but it can generate that
income quickly.
“We could help these guys in a matter of months, this year,” promised
David George of the Northern Ohio Hospitality and Entertainment
Coalition. The coalition presented the Ohio legislature with a plan to
legalize slot machines that promises a big payday for the state
government.
Although this plan would take a while to materialize it does not mean
Ohio cannot start making money off of slot machines very soon.
“If the state moved quickly, they could get the up-front $200 million
in licensing fees in this upcoming biennium. That's a significant chunk
of change," said former Cincinnati mayor Charlie Luken.
