Opposition to Barney Frank’s bill that would regulate and legalize
online casinos come from different groups and all have very different
reasons. However, opponents have yet to come up with a complaint that
supports do not feel will be resolved or better handled by regulating
online casinos. The brunt of the opposition is coming from sports
leagues and social conservatives.
“Illegal offshore Internet gambling sites are a criminal enterprise,
and allowing them to operate unfettered in the United States would
present a clear danger to our youth, who are subject to becoming
addicted to gambling at an early age,” complained Representative Spencer
Bachus. Bachus is a ranking member of the House Financial Service
Committee, the same committee over which Barney Frank presides as
chairman.
Back in 2007, shortly after the passage of the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act, Barney Frank attempted to pass a similar law
to regulate online casinos with no luck. However there are quite a few
differences in this law. The 2007 law left it up to the various
sporting leagues whether to permit betting on their matches while this
latest version expressly forbids online sports gambling.
However, you would never know that this new bill forbids sports
gambling the way that the Nation Football Leagues has used a lot of
resources to block the passage of this law. The vehement protest from
the NFL breeds questions as to why the legal is so against a law that
will legalize online casinos an industry that does not affect them in
the slightest.
