Delaware Threatens Online Casinos
It is not often that online casinos are given a
reason to sweat, but when online casinos are made to sweat it typically
comes out of the United States; such is the case with the latest
development in sport betting.
Sports betting is illegal in the United States, but
like most forms of gambling, including online casinos, there are people
that will accept wagers out their and if a gambler is even remotely
determined they will find them. Like most industries, the illegal
sports gambling business has gone online.
However, the state of Delaware may be taking a bite
out of their business. Delaware has long tossed about the idea of
legalizing sports betting, mainly as a way to compete in the tough
gambling market of the northeastern United States. In a surprise
development, a bill that once seemed dead in the water now seems certain
of passage into law.
“If Delaware legalizes sports gambling, it is not
as if they are going to cripple existing bookies that are operating
illegally,” said gambling industry observer William Hillson.
“But, if Delaware sets a precedent that other
states follow, it could mean the end of illegal gambling operations as
we know it.”
It certainly is not Delaware alone that has online
bookies quaking in their boots; it is the potential domino effect.
Again, gambling is very competitive in the northeast, if Delaware
corners the market in online gambling, it will only be a matter of time
before a state line New Jersey follows suit.
Similar to the hopes once held by online casinos
that at least one state would regulate the form of gaming, once Delaware
legalizes sports gambling it will only be a matter of time before the
several states follow and the United States will have no use for illegal
sports betting services.
