Online Casinos in the Courtroom
The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association is not the
only organization fighting in the court rooms for online casinos. The
group has done wonders for online casinos in both Kentucky and Minnesota
by arguing against state instituted bans that would set a dangerous
precedent for the future of ecommerce. But also doing battle on the
legal front is the Poker Players Alliance.
The Poker Players Alliance, reportedly over 1 million members strong
was a founded in response to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act of 2006. The law was passed in order to make it difficult for
United States residents to access online casinos. Poker was
unfortunately lumped in with the skill based games typically found in
online casinos.
The Poker Players Alliance and other poker advocates are attempting
to allow pokers fate to stand apart from the fate of online casinos.
The key to that is having the game recognized as a game of skill on a
state to state, but preferably on a national level.
Three very important court rulings show the progress being made by
the Poker Players Alliance. The Washington based group was very
involved in court rulings in Colorado, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania
where judges ruled that poker should be handled as a game of skill and
not a game of pure chance.
The court rulings did not change the legal status of poker in any of
the states, but the Poker Player Alliance is hoping to use the rulings
to help them in their lobbying efforts to law makers.
“Poker's only a gamble when you don't know what you're doing,” said
John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance.
