Bet Against Online Casinos
Although it remains to be seen exactly how far
Barney Frank will get with his legislation to regulate online casinos,
the most important thing the bill did was make the legalizing online
gambling argument in the United States real. Both sides are coming out
in strong numbers to either support or thwart legalized online casinos.
However, no surprise, there are a few dissenters claiming to be against
online casinos because of concerns of how it will effect the families of
compulsive gamblers that in truth are concerned about their own profits.
Joseph Alongi, who operates BetAgainstMe, is one
such example. Alongi is considers himself a former gambler. He is
among the people that believe online casinos is way too much
accessibility for problem gamblers and will come with serious social
costs if they are legalized.
“Although the revenue to individual states is
tempting, the harsh reality of gambling addiction is the insidious way
it destroys lives and ruins families,” says Alongi.
Algoni believes the only reason that legislators
are considering legalized online casinos is because of the recession and
the challenges most states face with their budget.
The strange thing is that Algoni’s site,
BetAgainstMe, is a gambling site. It operates on the social network
format, but the site makes a steady flow of cash off of advertising and
a reoccurring membership fee. Under current legal standards the
gambling offered and BetAgainstMe is legal because Algoni turns the
gambling into a contest between all members. One can easily argue that
Algoni’s real concern that the niche his site fills in a United States
without legalized gambling will be obliterated if Frank’s bill passes
and that this is Algoni’s real concern.
