More Slot Machine More Money
Casinos all across the United States are suffering
serious revenue losses. There are some that blame the current
recession, but brick and mortar casinos have been losing money for
months before the recession. Typically, the only portion of the gaming
industry that is making profits is online casinos. One slot machine
parlor in Maine is the exception to the rule.
Hollywood Slots in Bankor, Maine has managed to
muster an increase in revenues from slot machines. However, many
legislators stand in opposition of expanding gambling in the state. In
order to understand why lawmakers would stand in the way of apparently
successful slot machines, a closer look must be taken on how Hollywood
Slots managed to achieve its numbers.
Not only did Hollywood Slot enjoy a revenue
increase from March of 2009 to April of 2009, but the casino shows a
significant revenue increase from April of 2008 to April of 2009.
Unfortunately, the numbers are highly misleading. Last year the slots
parlor only operated 475 machines. This year 1,000 slot machines are on
the gaming floor.
Hollywood Slots managed to bring in $55.2 million
in April of 2009. According to the Department of Public Safety’s
gambling control department, that only represents a revenue increase of
.5 percent over March.
Simply adding more slot machines on the gaming
floor may generate more money but it does not necessarily mean more
money. After paying for the slot machine and paying tax and repairs it
may not be worth it for casinos to have more slot machines operating on
the game floor; unless there are enough customers to create demand for
the games.
