Yes, this is not the first time that Representative Barney Frank has
introduced legislation aimed at legalizing online casinos. As with any
bill, supporters should not celebrate too early for many things can
through it off the track of becoming a law. However, this new bill
introduced by the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee is
far from being a shot in the dark and holds real promise of success.
The new bill introduced by Frank on May 6th would give
authority to the United States Treasury Department to regulate online
casinos by establishing operating guidelines and issuing licenses. The
Treasury Department would also be able to suspend or revoke the license
of any party that does not adhere to the guidelines.
Less publicized that the Frank bill is another piece of legislation
that will help legal online casinos become a reality in the United
States. Jim McDermott of the Ways and Means Committee introduced bill
HR2268. This bill in particular outlined the collection of tax revenues
associated with online casinos.
As with anything in Washington D.C. a major part of what gets a law
passed is how it is perceived or pitched. Barney Frank has stood behind
the term personal freedom in this instance; in that he believes American
citizens should have the right to spend their own money on online
casinos or any other way they see fit with little interference from the
United States government.
“The government should not interfere with people’s liberty unless
there’s a good reason,” said Frank.
