White Hall Slot Machines Siezed
A police raid in Alabama led to the seizure of 101
slot machines out of the White Hall Gaming Center. The following day,
the White Hall Gaming Center remained close for business. In addition
to the illegal slot machines, police also seized over $560,000 in cash.
However the charity that runs the gaming center is
fighting back. On Thursday the group filed four court motions that was
hoped to have stopped the raid before it happened. Collins Pettaway,
attorney for White Hall Gaming Center is hopeful that a protective order
would soon have the group back in business. The four court orders
submitted by Pettaway to the Lowndes County Circuit Court were a
restraining order, a declaratory judgment, a complaint for permanent
injunction, and a motion that would have killed the search warrant.
If more raids are planned in search of illegal slot
machines, David Barber, Commander of Governor Bob Riley’s Task Force on
Illegal Gambling, certainly is not giving up any answers. At a Friday
news conference he refused to give any such answers.
One thing is for certain, this case is helping
Alabama clarify what it means when referring to illegal gaming
machines. Barber was able to give a very basic definition of what types
of machines are considered slot machines under Alabama law.
“The definition of a slot machine in Alabama, the
statutory definition and the court rulings that have followed that,
basically say if the machine was originally designed as a slot machine,
is a slot machine presently or is readily adaptable or convertible to
become a slot machine, it's a slot machine,” said Barber.
