It is a strange time for gambling in the United
States. The gambling industry is receiving an unprecedented amount of
new opportunities as local and federal governments seek to expand
gambling, often by bringing slot machines, to increase revenues. This
trend is likely due to the fact that gambling has always tended to
thrive in times of economic hardship. But no scene is more bizarre than
Florida. That is not an uncommon superlative for the Sunshine State,
but the best word for the sudden rash of new gambling legislation may be
‘crazy’.
There are many proposals on the table in Florida;
some seem like random shots in the dark while others seem to hold
promise. There is a possibility that racinos in South Florida may soon
offer blackjack. Parimutuels all around the state may either get slot
machines or video lottery terminals. Indian casinos in the state may be
able to offer roulette, craps, and blackjack effectively operating full
blown casinos. There is also talk of lifting all limits on poker.
While the legislation that is up in the air seems
unique and interesting there are quite a few gambling laws that have
passed or are in the works that are just as intriguing. In an effort to
compete with online casinos, Florida officially lowered its legal
gambling age to 18 years old. There is also an offer on the table that
would give Seminoles the monopoly on slot machines in the state. In
return the tribe would have to forfeit offering all other types of
gambling.
