In order to continue its protest of online casinos,
the National Football League has hired Jeff Miller to be a lobbyist for
their cause. Miller is the top aide to Senator Herb Kohl, his new
mission is to do everything in his power to help the National Football
League maintain their hypocritical image by making sure Congress leaves
the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act intact.
Several compounding issues pressured the National
Football League into believing that it needed to hire an in-house
lobbyist. Perhaps the most urgent of these issues are the several
actions threatening to over turn the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act and regulating online casinos. Most notable of these
attempts comes from House Representative Barney Frank who pledge to
issue some sort of legislation this session that would begin the road to
regulating online casinos.
The National Football League continues to hide
behind its all-American, family friendly image designed by public
relations wizard Pete Rozelle. In truth they league was founded and run
for years by bookmakers and gamblers. Miller has been hired to aid that
image by protecting the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
When asked about the belief that online casinos are likely to be
regulated and legalized in the coming months or years he responded, “We
want to maintain the integrity of the game [American Football], and
gambling threatens that.”
This statement represents a flawed logic. Europe
has been much more receptive to online casinos than the United States.
In order to protect professional sports, leagues have worked closely
with online casinos to monitor abnormal behavior that might indicate
gambling corruption.
