The hypocrisy in Kentucky apparently knows no
bounds. After the long drawn out battle to ruin online casinos in the
state, Kentucky is now making efforts to introduce slot machines at its
local racetracks. This move toward gambling expansion show that
Kentucky does not have a problem with gambling, they just have problem
with outside competition and will do anything to preserves its own, such
as horse racing and now slot machines.
Ron Geary, owner of Ellis Park, submitted House
Bill 158. The bill has received a tremendous amount of attention of
late. This comes to no surprise as many states are entertaining the
idea of operating slot machines as a means to additional revenue.
Legislators have discussed the possibility of slot machines at Kentucky
race tracks at length.
According to Geary, slot machines are absolutely
dire for the survival of racing in Kentucky. In theory, Geary should be
in a great position to get all the slot machines his heart desires since
Governor Steve Beshear was willing to destroy the entire Internet for
the sake of preserving the Kentucky horse racing industry. According to
Geary, without slot machines the 2009 racing season at Ellis Park would
be cut short and there would be absolutely no races in 2010.
Geary’s bill is receiving a lot of support.
“This is not just Mr. Ron Geary who has got this
sense of urgency,” said Senator Dorsey Ridely.
“And, it's statewide. And, they're leaving the
Commonwealth to go to other venues outside the Commonwealth.”
