Earlier this week, Indiana Downs opened the door of
their $200 million casino. The event was highly anticipated and people
lined up just to be the first to hit the gaming floor.
Hopefully opening night is no indicator of what the
casino will bring to the traffic in the area as a three mile traffic jam
formed like a welt on Interstate 74, originating at the exit leading to
the casino. Although that is good news for the new casino, it is bad
news for the brick and mortar casino. Traffic jams like that again show
the virtue of online casinos. The Internet super highway can handle a
much higher volume of traffic without hardly inconveniencing a soul,
this is unless of course the server crashes.
The crowd became so overwhelming at Indiana Downs
that the casino had to open its doors 30 minutes earlier than originally
scheduled. However its not clear if people were anxious to play the
games or see headliners Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.
“Crowd is not a word that we can use tonight,” said
Scott Furgeson, Mayor of Shelbyville.
“It's quite an understatement.”
There was no official count released on how many
people actually crowded the casino on opening night but General Manager
of the casino Mark Hemmerle believed the buildings capacity of 8,000
people was reached. The casino measures 233,000 square feet and offers
2,000 slot machines. Foodies can look forward to several great
restaurants as well.
Again the tie to other industries like the
restaurant business is a reason for the decline of the brick and mortar
casino and the rise of online casinos.
