Online casinos are under attack in the United
States, again; big surprises. Most of the country has been moved to
support the idea of regulating online casinos, giving individual
citizens their constitutional right to choose how to spend there money
and enjoy their pastime. As this is the United States there are groups
that opposed the regulation of online casinos. Unfortunately these
groups have resorted to spreading unfounded myths about the social ills
that would be caused by legalizing and regulating online casinos in the
United States.
The Christian right has taken a rather unchristian
stance against online casinos. The Christian news site Onenewsnow.com
recently published the ranting of anti-gambling extremists as if they
were the words of a qualified source. According to the report, people
playing at online casinos are switching from playing the stock market to
“investing their money in something that promises even less return:
Internet gambling.”
This ‘version of the truth’ is an attempt on the
part of religious groups, who have long opposed online casinos, to
explain the phenomenal growth of in popularity enjoyed by online casinos
in recent years. Social commentator Rick Wilson took issue with the
wording from the report. He said to use the word “investing” implies
that people spending their money on gambling entertainment are also
using vacations and movies as an investment plan.
Still the attacks continue. Tom Grey of Stop
Predatory Gambling labeled online casino operators as scavengers. He
also said that online casinos prey on people desperate for a financial
miracle. Again, Wilson disagrees.
“Most players say they'd love to win a jackpot, but
they are well aware the odds are against them,” continued Wilson.
“Very few think they'll win, but they enjoy playing
and like the idea they have a shot, however improbable.”
