The appearance of the Poker Player’s Alliance at the Conservative
Political Action Conference last month is a sure sign that efforts to
regulate online casinos in the United States is getting serious. The
Poker Players Alliance appearance in Washington is until know
unprecedented.
It was a very smart move from the Poker Player’s Alliance on behalf
of online casinos. Conservatives and the Republican party placed
themselves in direct opposition to online casinos by placing anti
internet gambling language in their party platform last year. In order
to get online casinos regulated, lobbyists will need support of some
conservatives. It just so happens that the Conservative Political
Action Conference is among the largest gatherings for American
conservatives.
“We are big enough that we belong there,” proclaimed Rich Muny, the
Poker Player’s Alliance State Director for Kentucky.
“We've had a couple years' worth of growth and won several recent
court cases. We didn’t even exist when social conservatives planted
their flag and said that conservatives oppose online poker. There is a
legitimate part of conservatism that would support the right to play.”
The main focus of the Poker Player’s Alliance is not necessarily to
regulate full online casinos but to at least get online poker
regulated. It has long been believed that legalizing and regulating
online casinos would start with online poker as online poker has a lot
more leverage, being a game of skill.
At the conference, the Poker Player’s Alliance distributed two sided
hand out that explained how protecting the rights of poker players would
appeal to the Republican agenda. Such reasons as limited government and
personal responsibility were among the listed reasons.
