As the Internet gambling industry becomes more and
more successful the number of people visiting online casino is of course
on the rise. Perhaps the fastest rising demographic is college
students. Many online casinos only have a minimum age requirement of
18, so online casinos see a lot of college traffic.
It is no secret that online casinos are fairing
better than brick and mortar casinos during this current economic
struggle. That may be the reason why brick and mortar casinos are
stealing ideas from online casinos just to stay afloat.
In Florida, two new bills may lower the legal
gambling age at brick and mortar establishments from 21 to 18. The
bills were recently passed in the Senate Regulated Industry Committee.
Florida has a number of reasons for wanting to lower the legal gambling
age. One reason is that introducing gamblers below the age of 21 offers
a whole new demographic of gamblers from which to draw revenue.
Currently online casinos are getting all the dollars of gamblers in
their late teens and very early twenties.
Unifying gambling laws was also a major purpose of
this bill at the moment the legal age for poker, horse tracks, and the
lottery in Florida is 18. On the other hand gamblers must be 21 in
order to play slot machines and blackjack.
“We wanted it to be uniform all the way across,”
said Dennis Jones, the Chairman of the Senate Regulated Industry
Committee. He also sponsored one of the bills.
“We felt that eighteen was a good age. The
committee also felt that bringing expanded gambling to Florida was a
good idea.”
