Online casinos are not illegal in the United States.  It is important for gamblers to understand that truth.  The 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act sent a blow to online casinos that the US and global market is still reeling from.  Many players stopped playing at online casinos and poker rooms because top names like Party Poker and Paradise Poker abandoned the US market. 

Most companies were acting under the assumption that online casinos and online gambling had been made illegal in the United States.  That is not the case and gamblers need to understand the specifics of the new law.  It does not affect a gamblers right to play at online casinos.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was almost smuggled into the United States law books.  Buried deep in a non-related port security bill pertaining to 9-11 boarder security issues, the act is rumored to be a lobbying effort by traditional land based casinos to injure the increasingly competitive online casino market.

While states like Illinois, Louisiana, and Washington have state laws deeming play at online casinos a felony, the UIGEA does not affect the a gamblers right to play on a federal level.  The law only limited online casinos by making it difficult for players to make deposit at these sites.

Banks and major credit card companies are now forbidden by law to process transactions form online gambling sites.  This gave rise to such deposit methods as Instant Echecks.  The bill made no mention of paper checks being illegal, or their online counter part known as the Echeck.  It is not illegal to play at online casinos unless state law expressly forbids it.  Operating online casinos are illegal in the United States, but most online casinos operate in off-shore locations anyway.

Echecks are just as safe and just as convenient as credit card deposits.  Right now there are only a few online casinos that accept this deposit method.  But, as all online casinos are anxious to see the return of the massive US market, more are sure to follow.
