Online casinos are all the rage among young people
in Indonesia. Unfortunately, many of them are unaware that online
casinos are illegal in their country. The convenience of online casinos
coupled with the high rate of computer literacy in the country has cause
the number of online gamblers among young adults to triple in the last
three years.
Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club are the
only places in Singapore that permits legal gambling. Neither of these
locations offers online casinos.
Gamblers face up to six months of jail time and $5,000 in fines if
charged with illegal gambling.
Despite the looming charges and fines, online casinos and sports betting
continue to increase in popularity. Not even denying local credit cards
have stopped online gambling. This action only allows business room for
third party money handlers, as has been the case in the United States.
The government has attempted to scare gamblers away by warning them that
gambling only leads to the loss of money. Yet still gambling has
engrossed a large portion of the culture. Bookies and other gambling
establishments are seeing an increase in business as well, online
casinos are simply preferred, due to the inherent convenience.
Once again, in yet another country, an example is presented where the
legalization and regulation of online casinos is perhaps a better
alternative to policing the morality of its citizens and locking people
up for spending their own money.
