Blackjack Backs Slot Machines
Although slot machines have been labeled the money makers at most
casinos, table games certainly carry their weight as well. Since
Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack and Mountaineer Casino Racetrack
and Resort brought in table games the two gambling venues have earned
combined gambling revenue of $455.1 million in 2008.
Back in 2007, when they were just operating slot machines, they
earned $56.4 million less with just $398.7 million. Table games were
added to both locations in December of 2007.
However their profits are in danger. President and general manager of
Wheeling Island track, Jim Simms, is pleased with the popularity and the
profitability of his track, unfortunately he see that looming threat of
competition, when Pennsylvania expands beyond slot machines to table
games later this year. He also sees the economy as a major hurtle for
2009. West Virginia gambling venues will have to fight harder for their
dollar.
After payouts, Wheeling has earned $195.1 million from table games
and slot machines since January of 2008. Mountaineer has earned $260
million from table games and slot machines.
The slot machines at both venues, of course, brought in a majority of
the revenue. Slot machines at Wheeling Island brought in $159.5 million
in 2008. Mountaineer slot machines brought in $208 million. Slot
machines at both locations did far better in 2008 with $172.7 million
for Wheeling Island and $226 million for Mountaineer.
When Pennsylvania slot machines start spinning, West Virginia venues
took a big hit and saw significant losses in revenue. That is why they
approved table games in 2007.
