Online casinos received yet another endorsement
from respectable research groups. The US National Gambling Impact Study
Commission and the American Psychiatric Association have concluded that
regulation of online casinos will be necessary in order to protect
problem gamblers. The groups considered it dangerous to problem
gamblers and teenagers that online casinos remain unregulated.
It is as if the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act does not exist. All the law seems to be doing is
exposing US players to dangerous and unethical sites. Despite the
nearly three year presence of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act, an estimated 1,300 online casinos still pulls in between $650
million and $2 billion each year from American players. The only thing
that these players get in return are exposure to fraud, identity theft,
and rigged games.
The most flawed argument to come from those that do
not want to regulate online casinos is the idea of protecting the
family. If anything puts America’s youth at danger it is the lack of
regulation and safeguards at online casinos. According to the American
Psychiatric Association, teens are the most susceptible to the
temptations of online casinos.
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was
a law passed and implemented in a hurried fashion. It has had very
little positive effect on the country and the consequences of the law
could almost be described as disastrous. Examples like the United
Kingdom and worried from respectable research group show that
legalization, licensing, and regulation may be the only sensible option
for the handling of online casinos.
