Plainridge Keeps up Slots Fight
Slot machines seem to be on the tongue of ever
horse racing track in the nation; assuming horse racing tracks had
tongues. Plainridge Racecourse continues the fight in Massachusetts by
once again pushing its Legislature to reconsider bringing slot machines
to the state’s racing venues.
President of Plainridge Racecourse, Gary
Piontkowski, has scheduled a big meeting that is supposed to take place
at 4 pm on Sunday, January 25th. The purpose of the meeting
is to discuss slot machines and the creation of racinos in the state of
Massachusetts.
Piontkowski is well aware of sinking tax revenues
in Massachusetts and believes that slot machines would provide the state
and it cities with much needed income. He projected that slot machines
would yield hundred of millions each year to the state.
Casino games are not a foreign issue in
Massachusetts. Just last year, the Massachusetts House rejected a
proposal put forward by Governor Deval Patrick to bring casinos into the
state. Slot machines at racetracks, however, were not taken into
consideration.
Representative Richard Ross, a Republican from
Wrentham, and Senator Scott Brown, also a Wrentham Republican, are both
very much in favor of slot machines. Both Brown and Ross believe slot
machines will be great for the Massachusetts economy. Plainridge, where
the Plainridge Racecourse is located, is in their district. At least
the track has that much support on their side.
According to Representative Ross, several lawmakers
have filed new gambling legislation during this session. Slot machines
just might be coming to Massachusetts.
