All of the excitement about slot machines coming to
Nebraska may have been a touch premature. At this point it is not even
certain if the proposal that would allow state racetracks to operate
slot machines will even be debated on the floor of the Nebraska
Legislature.
Although slot machines may still have a chance, the
numbers are already looking uncertain for the proposal as three of the
eight General Affairs Committee members have already declared their
opposition to the slot machine proposal. Two other committee members
said they were highly skeptical about slot machines. There are two
members that are interested in the proposal, however, they would like to
hear from constituents before they give slot machines their support.
Of the eight members, only one man seems to full
support a proposal to bring slot machines to the state, committee
chairman Senator Russ Karpisek. Senator Karpisek actually introduced
both Legislative Resolution 6CA and its companion Legislative Bill 266.
“I think this would be a very controlled way to get some of that money
that is leaving the state,” said Karpisek.
This past Monday, a public hearing was held by the
committee regarding slot machine. No vote was taken during the
meeting. Karpisek said he intends to hold off on a committee vote until
legislators have more time to digest the measure.
LR 6CA would grant permission for the seven
Thoroughbred racing venues in the Nebraska to operate as many as 3,500
slot machines each. LB 266 explains how the constitutional amendment
would be executed upon receiving voter approval.
