Raynham Park in Massachusetts seems to be getting a second wind since
odd of a new train station and new slot machines have greatly improved.
Hope comes from the election of House Speaker Robert DeLeo. DeLeo
has long been an advocate for gambling expansion in Massachusetts. With
DeLeo as House Speaker it is now more likely than ever that
Massachusetts’ four race tracks will be aloud to operate slot machines.
According to Joseph Pacheco, chairman of the Raynham Board of
Selectman, Rep. David Flynn filed a bill related to slot machines a few
weeks ago. Pacheco claims DeLeo made it clear that he wanted to discuss
the possibility of bring slot machines to the state’s four race tracks
located in Raynham, Plainville, Boston, and Revere.
“DeLeo is amendable to slot machines, since he represents Revere and
Winthrop, and a race track is within his district,” said Pacheco.
State official clarify that it does not come down to a choice between
as train station or slot machines. Both slot machines and a new station
are likely on the way.
David Spillane, director of planning and urban development in
Massachusetts, has his eyes set on a 135 acre park, owned by Carney, as
a sight that could accommodate both slot machines and a new train
station.
“It's a very big site,” said Spillane.
“It could accommodate a number of things. It would
be up to the town, as far as what they wanted there. And a train station
would take up a pretty small area. So it wouldn't have to be one thing
or the other.”
