Colorado Judge Rules with Reason
While only in baby steps, legislation regarding
online casinos is moving forward. It has long been predicted that if
online casinos were to be legalized that it may happen with online poker
first. That may indeed be the case.
Recently yet another judge, this time in Colorado,
ruled that poker was in fact a game of skill not a game of chance. This
marks at least the second time in less than two week that charges of
illegal gambling activity were dropped against a poker player.
“The PPA is pleased with the outcome of this case. It is further
confirmation that poker is indeed a game of skill, not chance,” said
Gary Reed, Colorado State Director of the Poker Players Alliance.
“At the same time, the not guilty verdict cements
the rights of Colorado citizens to enjoy the American pastime of poker
and will allow law enforcement to use its scarce resources to
investigate real unlawful activity in the state, not poker games.”
In the Colorado case, the accused was organizing
bar poker games for him and some friends. The man claims that he did
not realize he was breaking any laws but was still placed under arrest.
Luckily for the accused, the Poker Players Alliance seized the
opportunity to forward their cause by paying for an expert witness to
testify that poker is best classified as a game of skill, having no more
chance involved than a game of chess.
“We never believed we were doing anything wrong whatsoever. It's
entertainment. Some people play golf, I play poker,” said the accused
Kevin Raley.
