Online Casinos Start Second Civil War
Online casinos seem to be igniting a civil war in
the United States. States seem only to be able to agree one thing, that
they should have the right to decide the fate of online casinos in their
country and that gambling has never been a federal issue and that should
be no different for online casinos.
California and Kentucky are great depictions of the
arguments for and against online casinos. California, like many states
in the Union are suffering financially and have the good sense to
recognize the potentially huge profits that could come from taxing
online casinos. But, taxation of course requires legalization and
regulation.
On the other side of the divide are states like
Kentucky that are wholly against online casinos and blame the industry
for the short coming in their own gambling endeavors. Kentucky has
given birth horror stories like Governor Steve Beshear attempting to
seize the domain name of 141 online casinos, risking the destruction of
the Internet just to give state horse racing venues an advantage.
Then, filling the divide, are fence sitters like
the American Gambling Association. The American Gambling Association is
without doubt one of the most influential gambling lobbying groups in
the country. Online casinos could really use there endorsement and the
American Gambling Association flirted with the idea of supporting the
industry.
However, due to internal disagreement, the position
of the American Gambling Association remains hazy and impotent. While
the unemployment rate in the United States seems to be on a steady climb
toward 10%, a multi-billion dollar industry that could provide state and
federal resource and thousands of jobs is being kept.
