The mess regarding the Untied States and online
casinos has been played down as if it were only an industry related
issue. Luckily, there is still one man in Congress that knows the
import of the issue and continues to fight to rectify the wrongs
committed by the Bush Administration.
Representative Barney Frank is known to take on
unique issues, such as creating a bill that would legalize carrying
small quantities of marijuana. Frank is also the chairman of the House
Financial Services Committee and has long opposed the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act. He has opposed the act for reasons beyond
being a supporter of online casinos. According to Frank the gambling
law directly violates the civil liberties of the American people. He
also feels the way the law has been implemented puts unnecessary stress
on the American banking system; a system that needs no additional stress
in such times of economic hardship.
On an international front, the United States has
received a very bad image due to the Bush policies toward online
casinos. Regulators from the European Union have threatened to file
complaints to the World Trade Organization for what seems to be American
protectionism. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act,
according to the European Union, puts the United States in violation of
the international trade agreement and civil liberties.
Online casinos are perfectly legal is many of the
countries that the United States calls allies. Gambling is not illegal
in the United States, yet some how online casinos are expected to be the
plague that will rot away the fabric of our society.
