Gambling expansion has always been a popular topic, but ever since
the beginning of the global economic recession is seems more and more
government are trying to either bring in slot machines or up the number
of slot machines operating in their communities with hopes of benefiting
from taxation.
Recently a politician in Vernon, British Columbia has focused on
expanding the number of slot machines in operation. Counselor Jack
Gilroy notified his colleagues that he intends to challenge the existing
slot machines law in the community on February 23rd. At the
moment, the current law only allows 300 slot machines. Gilroy would
like to see that upped to 400 slot machines.
“The extra machines won’t hurt problem gamblers,” said Gilroy, in
direct response to one of the main oppositions to gambling expansion.
“We could close the casino and the problem gamblers will go to
Kamloops or Kelowna.”
The current limit of 300 slot machines was set by the previous
council last fall. But even at that time the British Columbia Lottery
Corporation and Lake City Casinos were hoping for 400 slot machines at a
brand new casino being constructed in the community.
It had been argued by city officials that Lake City Casinos would be
allowed the desired 400 slot machines despite the 300 slot machines
limit because they included the additional slot machines in the designs
submitted to the city. If this were to happen it would mean the Lake
City Casinos operation would be legally non-conforming under bylaw.
