The United Kingdom has been praised as one of the
first countries to truly regulate online casinos on a federal level.
Most credit the regulation process a success and hold the United Kingdom
as an example of how well a country can effectively oversee online
casinos and Internet gambling
A recent case in the news involving a postal worker
stealing from Royal Mail to feed her gambling addiction has people
questioning the effect of legal online casinos on the populous. 39 year
old Patricia Barnes has been sentenced to a 12 month term for stealing
special delivery posts. Barnes admitted to using the cash, usually
found within such posts, to gamble at online casinos.
Problem gambling counselors claim that similar
cases are happening with increased regularity around the nation.
Everyday people seem to be stealing money in order to wager at online
casinos.
The numbers have not grown to an unhealthy
proportion. At the moment roughly 98 percent of people that visit
online casinos display healthy gambling behavior. The problem is that
games requiring limited skills like bingo or slot machines attract
people that would not necessarily work up the courage to walk into a
land based gambling establishment. It is typically on these low and no
skill games found at online casinos that irresponsible players will
exercise their addiction.
“Most of the people who end up in court are first time offenders and all
their friends would be surprised that they are there,” explained a
former addict, who wished to remain anonymous.
“But losing money and lying about it because you don't think it's a
problem is all part of the pathology of gambling.”
