The commonwealth of Kentucky is sending mixed
signals to its residents. While the Governor is hell bent on riding the
state of online casinos, the legislature has made it a priority to put
the state’s gambling agenda aside in order to focus on helping the
struggling economy.
Someone may need to inform Governor Steve Beshear
that online casinos are no longer a priority. The Governor, best fitted
with a black hat from the Salem witch trials, intends to move forward
with an appeal to the state Supreme Court; the next step in his effort
to seize the domain name of 141 online casinos are related Internet
gambling sites. Recently, online casinos celebrated as the Court of
Appeals ruled against Beshear’s ability to seize domain names.
Even the Kentucky House Speaker understands that
gambling concerns come secondary to the economy. In response to a
question about his bill that would bring slot machines to state racing
venues, he said, “We'll put it on the back burner until we resolve these
(economic) issues. We've obviously got our plate full.”
However, Beshear is not alone in sending mixed
messages; he has Secretary of Kentucky Justice and Public Safety, J.
Michael Brown on his side.
“The Commonwealth will continue its action to protect Kentucky citizens
from illegal Internet gambling operations, and appeal the recent Court
of Appeals ruling to the state Supreme Court,” said Brown.
Kentucky citizens should be highly concerned. Some of
their elected officials believe that attacking online casinos is more
important than getting the economy up and running again.
