MD Frats Want Slot Machines
Slot machines seem to be a hot commodity for all
sorts of groups. While Maryland is working out the details of getting
slot machines arranged for their racing venues, Fraternal organizations
in the state would like to operate slot machines to help cover
operational expenses and help fund charitable programs.
A House bill that would regulate the slot machine and require half of
the revenue to fund charitable causes is currently under construction.
According to Sarge Garlitz, commander for the American Legion Post 166
in Ocean City, clubs need the extra money more than ever. Garlitz says
the slot machines will help the clubs stay in business at a time when
membership has dropped off significantly while operational costs
continue to climb.
“We need this right now so we can help our community, help our
veterans and their families,” said Garlitz.
It seems that Garlitz can be optimistic about receiving his slot
machines. According to Delegate Norman Conway, the Ways and Means
Committee hearing for House Bill 65 went off without a hitch. He be
believes it is more than likely the bill will pass. There was a similar
bill submitted last year and the clubs came very close to getting slot
machines, unfortunately the legislators ran out of time to pass the
bill.
Citing the benefits that slot machines have brought fraternal groups
on the Eastern Shore, Conway said that slot machines will not only bring
financial stability to these fraternal organizations, they will also
generate a “tremendous amount of monetary support to youth groups” and
other nonprofit groups.
