Maryland is trying desperately to get its act
together as they set up slot machines in the state. Recently an idea
surfaced, perhaps as a way of making up for the lack of bids on slot
machines, to place slot machines in the Baltimore airport. That is
correct; passengers may soon be vying for jackpots on slot machines in
the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. But,
not if one, powerful politician has anything to say about it.
Maryland Governor Martain O’Malley is made it known
that he completely rejects the idea of installing slot machines in the
Baltimore airport. However, installing slot machines may not be such a
bad idea. In direct opposition to O’Malley’s point of view is Senate
President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Miller believes that slot machines
in the airport would be a great way of brining in more tax revenue that
would go directly in to state coffers.
The reason Maryland legalized slot machines was to
close the gap on a budget deficit and keep gambling dollars within the
state. This new bill would allow 3,000 slot machines at the airport in
Baltimore. 3,000 slot machines is twice the amount in the Las Vegas
airport.
Although the governor does not like the idea, the
bill is receiving support from both sides of the aisle. However, it
would take a statewide referendum to bring in the slot machines as it
would require an amendment to the state constitution.
The slot machines would be confined to the secured
areas of the airport, meaning only ticketed passengers could play.
