The debate continues as to whether online casinos actually curb or
increase the occurrence of problem gambling cases. Either way it is
important that any and all cases of problem gambling, stemming from
online casinos or brick and mortar casinos, need proper attention.
Recently, Caroline Jawad and Stephan Griffiths performed a study in
search of solutions to reduce the number of problem gambling cases
spurred by online casinos and internet gambling sites.
According to Jawad, their study was inspired by concerns related to
the growth and popularity of online casinos and Internet gambling. She
is attempting to assess the attitudes and awareness of responsible
gambling in relation to online casinos. A random sample of online
gamblers will be contacted through email, soliciting their participation
in an online survey. In addition to that, Jawad has attempted to secure
a link on gambling related sites, asking visitors to contribute to a
research study.
The reason that the Jawad and Griffiths study is centered on online
casinos and not all forms of gambling addiction is due to the
controversy surrounding Internet gambling. Gambling is not foreign to
any culture. For centuries now cultures across the world have enjoyed
gambling as pastime. Yet still, the rise of online casinos has become
one of the most controversial technological advancements in the recent
memory.
According to Jawad, very little information is available on the
information that she seeks. Most statistics related to online casinos
are about demographic. She seeks to find out more about the extent of
problem gambling cases online and the effectiveness of player protection
options.
