As a way of helping bingo promoters in Missouri, the state is
considering passing legislation that would give them the right to
operate low jackpot slot machines. However, there are of course quite a
few people that do not support slot machine in Missouri, even as a way
of helping fraternal organizations raise money for charitable projects.
As a matter of fact, some think the best way to help bingo promoters is
improve the legislation restricting their bingo games.
One of the main problems with the legislation that would allow slot
machines in fraternal lodges is the lack of enforcement. The
legislation puts a $3,600 cap on daily jackpots but there is no one
around to see that the cap is honored. Casinos have a state gaming
agent on site for the purpose of enforcing gambling laws and ensure that
the games are being kept honest on both sides. As far as can be told
now, the only enforcer at a fraternal lodge would be the bartender, who
is likely to turn a blind eye if the slot machines are making a profit.
Slot machine opponents believe that legislators could very easily
modify and update bingo legislation to bring back the business the game
used to generate. For years now Jefferson City, Missouri has been
collecting proposals that would improve bingo business for these groups
and doing absolutely nothing with them.
It is likely that if the unfairly low jackpot cap of $500 was removed
from bingo games, they may attract more business.
