Capt. Ahab Pursues Online Casinos
There is clearly a disconnect in Kentucky. The
state, like the rest of the world, is suffering the effects of an
economic recession. Many lawmakers have decided that the economy is the
most important issue at hand and all other concerns must be placed on
the back burner, including a plan to bring slot machines to local
racetracks.
On the other hand, Governor Steve Beshear is still
bent on bringing his crusade against online casinos before the Supreme
Court. Beshear is still soar after the Court of Appeals overturned a
ruling from the Circuit Court that allowed him to seize the domain name
of 141 online casinos.
People in Kentucky are thoroughly confused as to
how some of their lawmakers can understand the necessity to focus on the
poor economy, while their governor can continue to Ahab like pursuit of
online casinos.
“It makes no sense that lawmakers would stop gambling discussions on one
side, then on the other side continue to waste time on an appeal they
are most likely going to lose in the state Supreme Court,” said Manny
F., a Kentucky resident.
Beshear’s actions against online casinos have made
very little since from the beginning, other than it being a clear act of
protectionism. On his gubernatorial campaign trail, Beshear ran on a
gambling expansion platform.
“It is no secret that Beshear is trying to protect the state's gaming
interests with his move to go after the domain names, but the decision
by lawmakers to stop moving forward with a proposed gambling Bill to
concentrate on fixing the economy is now making Beshear's decision to
pursue the domain case in the Supreme Court look foolish,” said observer
Billie Haskens.
