Trekkies have more than one reason to celebrate these days. While
many are anticipating the release of the all new Star Trek film which
shows the beginning of the Stark Trek Enterprise, Trekkies that like to
wager have a surprise in the way of slot machines. Harrah’s
Entertainment casinos in Las Vegas have begun rolling out slot machines
themed after Star Trek. The slot machines are designed by WMS
Industries.
Las month at the Global Gaming Expo was the first time the new Star
Trek slot machines were unveiled by WMS Industries. These new slot
machines are a tribute to the original 1960s television series; they
even come with video clips from the original 79 episodes.
This deal was big for WMS as they had to fill an order of about 120
slot machines. Bill Lerner, a gaming analyst from Deutsche Bank sees the
deal as a change in the way Harrah’s does business. Prior to this the
casino operator was strictly against participation games where they have
to share revenues with slot machine manufacturers. The deal shows they
have at least stepped back from their anti participation policy.
Earlier this year Harrah’s actually removed hundreds of participation
slot machines from the floors of their Las Vegas casinos. Executives
were determined to change the revenue share percentage with the
manufacturers of slot machines. They ever removed the very popular
Wheel of Fortune slot machines, distributed by International Game
Technology.
Between the new blockbuster film and the flashy new slot machines,
2009 is set to be a celebratory year for Trekkies young and old.
