Legislation May Affect Server Games
One reoccurring theme at this year’s Global Gaming
Expo in Las Vegas was the future of gambling. Many have recognized
server based gambling, like online casinos and mobile casinos, will be
around for quite some time. That becomes increasingly clear as the
credit freeze makes it almost important for brick and mortar casinos to
secure capital for a building project. Slot machines that allow players
to play more than one game at a time also seem to have a long shelf
life.
If the United States would like to stay in the
gambling game at all, they will have to soon review their policy toward
online casinos. There are many games on the floor of brick and mortar
casinos that require server access. They may not be what comes to mind
when one says ‘Internet gambling’, but these serve based games do
require players to bet online.
Not so long ago, the American Gaming Association
would not rest until online casinos were banned from the country. Now,
they have changed their tune and recognized that the fate of land based
casinos and online casinos are linked. The American Gaming Association
suddenly stood in full support of legislation that legalizes and
regulates online casinos.
The latest advances in land based slot machines are
flashy enough to compete with the hottest virtual slots games found at
online casinos. On the other hand they are not so high-tech that the
elderly crowd would be discouraged from giving them a go.
Leading software developers, such as IGT, Bally
Technologies, and WMS Gaming are all experimenting with server based
slot machines.
