Millennium to Reinvent Rockingham
Las Vegas based casino operators Millennium
Gaming is serious about reinventing Rockingham Park if New Hampshire
legalizes slot machines. Though the group is convinced of the parks
potential success with slot machines, there are also a lot of doubt
coming from people who sound just as certain.
If New Hampshire were to legalize slot
machines, Millennium predicts the Rockingham Park will pull in as many
as 4 million patrons annually – 70 percent of the traffic would be from
other states. Millennium also foresees $200 million in tax revenues.
After spending $450 million on improvements to the venue, Millennium
also believes Rockingham will create thousands of new jobs in New
Hampshire.
The group plans to put a lot of work into
Rockingham Park. The grandstand would have to be rebuilt and
construction would also be needed to build temporary housing for the
slot machines until the venue is fully renovated.
Edward Callahan, general manager of Rockingham
Park, is excited about the idea of bringing slot machines to the park.
Revenue from slot machines would allow him to sweeten the racing purses
and revive live thoroughbred races. Rockingham Park has not hosted a
thorough bred racing event since 2002. At the moment, the venue is used
for simulcasts and harness racing.
With all of the promise that Millennium
believes Rockingham has to offer New Hampshire, it is still a tough
sell. As desperate as the state is for new sources of revenue because
of a poor economy, there are many people fundamentally against the
expansion of gambling in New Hampshire.
