Millennium Interest in Slot Machines
Millennium Gaming is serious about bringing
slot machines to New Hampshire’s Rockingham Park. The Las Vegas based
casino operator is ready to spend close to half a billion dollars.
Since 2005, Millennium Gaming has been sitting
on an option to buy Rockingham Park. The company fully believes that if
slot machines were spinning at the racetrack, the venue would morph into
a very successful entertainment and gambling venue. Not only that but,
the state of New Hampshire would benefit big time off of the tax
revenue.
A newly formed coalition named Fix It Now New
Hampshire – made up of business, gambling, and labor union
representatives – is pushing for slot machines as the solution to the
impending New Hampshire budget shortage.
In past, several efforts have been made to
legalized slot machines and expand gambling in New Hampshire. To this
day all efforts have failed. But times have changed and with the
sluggish economy and a budget shortage that could be as great as $400
billion over the next two years, slot machines are starting to sound
like a good idea to some. This is similar to the trend that eventually
resulted in Maryland legalizing slot machines last month.
“If the state is looking for new revenue to
address this budget challenge, it can't afford to risk our economic
advantage by implementing a sales or income tax,” said Chuck Morse, a
member of Fix It Now New Hampshire and a former New Hampshire senator.
One year ago, Millennium proposed legalizing
slot machines. The effort was not successful.
