Many have celebrated the election of Barack Obama
as the next president of the United States of America. Perhaps none
have celebrated his election more than that Internet gambling industry,
hoping to bring online casinos back to the US market. A motion was
already set in congress to repeal the much hated Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act. Now with Democrats gaining much more of a
majority in the Congress and Barack as the President, it seemed like
Christmas for online casinos.
Unfortunately a shadow of doubt has been cast on
ambitions for online casinos in the United States. That doubt is
personified in Eric Holder, Obama’s pick for Attorney General. It is
not clear what Holder’s policy will be toward online casinos but it is
known that he has ties to the Department of Justice and rivals of online
casinos. Industry insiders are just slightly unnerved by Holder.
Eric Holder served under Janet Reno as Deputy
Attorney General. Since that time was employed by the Covington and
Burling law firm in Washington, D.C. While working with Covington and
Burling, Holder represent the National Football League. The NFL was
very instrumental in the Bush administration attempting to implement the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act at the last minute only a few
weeks ago. The NFL is no friend to online casinos. As a matter of fact
the National Football League is one of the most powerful lobbying groups
opposing online casinos.
Many people are worried about Holders relationship with the NFL, but
many are still hopeful that he will not stand in front of repealing the
UIGEA.
