Barack Obama’s appointment of Eric Holder as
Attorney General has many people worried about the possible future for
online casino in the United States. Holder has a few alliances in the
past with overtly anti online casinos groups, including the National
Football League. The National Football League is perhaps the most
powerful lobbying group opposing the legalization of online casinos.
Many in the Internet gambling industry remember
that only a few weeks ago, William Wichterman, a former paid lobbyist
for the National Football League, used his position in the White House
to push for the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act.
There are more relationships beyond the National
Football League that have people worried. Insiders of the online casino
industry do not like the fact that Holder has spent years with the
Department of Justice. Although the Department of Justice is sworn to
protect and uphold the United States Constitution, it has more of a
reputation of bullying and extorting antagonists.
Recently the Department of Justice has gone after
online casinos in a manner many view as unjust. Fresh examples are the
persecution of Bet On Sports and Partygaming. Both these cases are
examples of the Department of Justice aggressively enforcing laws that
do not exist.
On the other hand, Obama was elected on the promise
of limiting executive authority. Hopefully he will not allow the Eric
Holder to abuse his powers as Attorney General the way that many of his
colleagues have in his past. Time will tell and online casinos will be
standing by.
