After a history of being one of the most sorely
disputed topics in the states history slot machines have returned to
Maryland. Slot machines have been absent from the state for decades
after a first go around when it was blamed for many social ills in
Maryland communities.
Now that they are legal again, there are several
groups expressing interest in operating slot machines in Maryland.
There are only a limited number of licenses that will be distributed by
a board headed up by Donald C. Fry, current head of the Greater
Baltimore Committee.
Fraternal organizations have also expressed
interest in operating slot machines. A group in Ocean City would like
to use the lucrative machines for the purpose of fund raising. The Town
council has unanimously voted in favor of supporting the interest of
local fraternal organizations. Council member voted 6-0 in favor of
writing a letter of support the legislators of the Lower Shores state.
Treasure of the Ocean City Elks Lodge, Jim Flaig, says his group has
already done all it can to make state legislators aware their intent and
they look forward to securing meetings with State Senate President
Thomas V. Mike Miller and Speaker of the House Michael Busch.
This is not the first push by fraternal organizations in Maryland to
operate slot machines. The General Assembly turned down a bill that
would have made it legal for them to operate slot machines earlier this
year. But now that the entire state has excepted slot machines as a way
of increasing tax revenues, it seems fraternal organizations have a
better shot at achieving their goals.
